山田 秀頌 YAMADA Hidenobu, PhD

専門はトランスジェンダー理論、クィア理論。

東京大学法学部に進学しましたが、竹村和子の著作に触れたことがきっかけでクィア理論を志し、東京大学大学院総合文化研究科・表象文化論コースに入学。クィア理論の隣接領域であるトランス理論を専攻に定めました。2025年9月、同大学で博士号を取得。

修士と博士課程では一貫して、医療的な手段を用いて性別移行をする人々の観点を通じて、身体的な移行か社会的な越境かといった、トランスのアイデンティティと実践をめぐる政治的な葛藤をとらえなおすことを目指しました。加えて、医療への注目という視座から、トランス理論と障害理論との接続を模索してきました。

論文・論考は、『ジェンダー研究』（お茶の水女子大学）、『Gender and Sexuality』（国際基督教大学）、『現代思想』等に掲載。2022年にはトランス・スタディーズを代表する学術誌であるTSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly誌に論考が採用されました。

今後は、トランス理論という方法を大事にしつつも、いっそう広い視野で研究に取り組みたいと考えています。特に、理論的探究が生起する場所がつねに特定の歴史的文脈の中であることへの自覚から、理論の生産地である英語圏（主にアメリカ）と、理論家としての「私」が位置している日本とのあいだの関係性あるいは翻訳の問題を中心に据えることで、グローバルな力学とローカルな文脈が衝突する地点としての日本におけるジェンダー／セクシュアリティの政治によりよく応答することができると考えています。この観点から、現在は、2010年代の「LGBTブーム」を経由して2020年代のバックラッシュへといたる流れをその歴史的背景にさかのぼって再考することを目標としています。

My area of expertise is transgender theory and queer theory.

While I was entering the Faculty of Law at the University of Tokyo, I encountered the work of Takemura Kazuko, which motivated me to study queer theory. So I enrolled in the Culture and Representation Course in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Tokyo, choosing to specialize in trans theory, an adjacent field to queer theory. I completed a PhD there in September 2025.

Throughout my master’s and doctoral program, I aimed to reconsider the political conflict surrounding trans identity and practice, such as whether a physical transition or a social boundary-crossing should be focused upon, from the perspective of people transitioning through medical means. In addition, I have explored the intersection between trans theory and disability theory from this perspective of attending to medical care.

My articles and essays have been published in Journal of Gender Studies (Ochanomizu University), Gender and Sexuality (International Christian University), Gendai Shisō, and other journals. In 2022, an essay was published in TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly.

From now on, while still centering on the methodology of trans theory, I hope to approach my research with an even broader perspective. Especially aware that theoretical inquiry always emerges within a specific historical context, I believe that, by focusing on the relationship or translation between the English-speaking world (primarily the United States), where theory is produced, and Japan, where “I”, as a theorist, am situated, I will be able to better respond to gender/sexuality politics in Japan, a place where global dynamics and local contexts collide. From this point of view, I currently plan to reexamine the development from the “LGBT boom” in the 2010s to the backlash in the 2020s by tracing its historical background.

Born in 1991 in Hiroshima, Japan, and spent my childhood in a suburb of Aichi.
